Our country’s history is a remarkably fascinating story. It is a hopeful story that is unique in the history of the world. And it is a story every American must embrace if we are to remain a place where people are free to flourish and govern ourselves.
In this new free online course, The American Idea, you will discover a deeper understanding of what it means to be an American through the memorable expressions of Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, Jr. in three key documents:
- The Declaration of Independence
- The Gettysburg Address
- “I Have a Dream” speech
In this course, Ashbrook’s panel of scholars will help to guide your understanding of the American idea at work in the American story. You’ll study the text of each of these documents that reveal the principles of liberty and equality that bind us together. You’ll learn that our story is one of an imperfect people striving for a more perfect union. You’ll discover that while we have at times failed to live up to the America Idea, it is the source from which all of the blessings of American liberty flow.
This course is offered for free by the Ashbrook Center to help you gain a deeper appreciation of our rich history so that our Founding principles may guide your heart and mind as a citizen.
Registration for The American Idea online course is currently closed. We are in the process of rebuilding the course on a newer, more user-friendly platform. You can email us at amideapodcast@ashbrook.org for information about the course, which will be available later in Summer 2024.
