Lessons in Leadership from the Gridiron to the Board Room

For some, football is just a weekend pastime. But for those who play and coach the game, it can be the rich soil in which truly exceptional character is cultivated. Jim Tressel and Lee Owens were both honed into outstanding leaders by the game.

Jim Tressel earned his place as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, leading The Ohio State Buckeyes to seven Big Ten Championships in ten years as well as the National Championship in 2002. His leadership on the gridiron extended to his role as President of Youngstown State University, where he served from 2014-2023.

Lee Owens, who served as Ashland University’s head football coach for 19 years, is a legend in his own right. He ushered in a new era of winning Eagles football, with four conference championships and more playoff appearances and wins than any coach before him. Upon his retirement in 2022, Tressel described him as “one of the finest collegiate coaches in Ohio history. A winner, a teacher, a servant-leader, a difference-maker, and a friend.”
