War brings out the best and worst of humanity. In the case of America, the bloody Civil War shattered public and private life, turning brother against brother, and leading to more death and destruction than has ever been wrought on American soil.

Yet in the midst of this terrible struggle, many courageous heroes rose up to help save our country. We owe these men and women a debt of gratitude.

In commemoration of the end of the Civil War in April 1865, 157 years ago, Ashbrook hosted a special webinar exploring the life and legacy of some of the war’s indispensable heroes, including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Ashbrook Executive Director Jeff Sikkenga welcomed Dr. Jason Stevens, Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science and History at Ashbrook for the conversation. Dr. Stevens is keen scholar of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War and has a wealth of insight.
